Storage Stories – One Man’s Trash

Storage units are a perfect example of the saying “One man’s trash can be another man’s treasure”.

Storage units have been a treasure trove for many years. You can find treasure troves of everything from rare books and magazines to priceless paintings. Even the old standby, cold hard cash. Here are some of the most unusual, coolest and most expensive items that we have ever found in a storage facility.

This Storage story: One Man’s Trash

People participate in storage auctions because they hope to find valuable items or at least something that is cool. They may not be expecting to find thousands of dollars. One couple in Arizona experienced exactly that. According to the National Purchasing Partners this couple was homeless and was looking for a couch to fit their desert camp. They bid at least $10 for the couch they found at a storage auction. Nobody else bid. Even the adorable stuff teddy bear came with the couch.

The website said that they found out that the teddy bear contained $300,000.000 worth of tightly wound bills as they were packing it away. They kept the cash, paid taxes, and hired a lawyer for their defense.

When it came to the stash of previously recorded songs, but not yet released, a lawyer was necessary. A man bought a storage unit that contained almost 250 songs Jackson had previously recorded, years before he had a record deal. Many of the tracks featured Jackson as well as Tina Turner, a guest artist. Although the buyer was thrilled with his discoveries, the contents of the unit were currently in litigation to determine who owns them.

Moving from music to video games leads us to a Storage Wars bidder located in Southern California. The unit was filled with a variety of vintage video games. This buyer was lucky. These were not just old Sega Genesis cartridges. The total value of these games was over $50,000.

Storage Wars featured an unusual item in an episode. Barry Weiss (known as “The Collector”) won an auction bid that included an antique peep-show machine.

The machine was described by Work and Money as “a hand-cranked, circular wheel that allowed a viewer to quickly see images on cards that were turned around in a circle.” It was worth $7,000.

These items, and many more, were found in seemingly innocuous storage units. This just goes to show how important storage auctions are.
